What does it look like in a nutshell?
Steampunk fashion is partly inspired by late 19th century and early 20th century fashion victorian fashion. But it also has an extremely unique retro futuristic twist to the style. Some Steampunk fashion even has a post apocalyptic influence. It consists of clothing, hairstyling, jewelry, body modification and make up.
For women it’s common to see long, flowing dresses and for men overcoats and trousers. But there’s so much more to the style. Tops hats, bowler hats, goggles, glasses, jewelry, pocket watches, and wrist watches often make an appearance as well.
And to top it all off many of these items can be adorned with a mechanical or machine aesthetic. One extremely common example of this can be the use of gears throughout the design as shown in the example picture above.
How did Steampunk fashion develop?

Since the genre emerged, the aesthetic of steampunk fashion has remained constant. New ideas in literature, and advancements in science and technology have resulted in subtle changes. Even though the genre did not become widely known until the late 20th century, steampunk and its fashion has been developing for decades.
OK great, show me some examples!
Just like its counterparts in other art forms, primarily literature, steampunk fashion is based on the aesthetic of an alternate history.
Within Steampunk fashion, there are a number of “personas” or sub styles to be found. For example the classic Steampunk lady adorned with brass instruments and gear.
Or the gentleman persona, with a long coat over formal clothes along with mechanical augmentations can be seen in the picture above.
…Or the the valiant lone wolf explorer, armed with a Steampunk styled gun and various other items.
Despite all of these various styles within the Steampunk genre, they all share the same common characteristics:
